Physical Therapy
Physical therapy diagnoses and treats health-related conditions, illnesses, or injuries that limit your ability to move and perform activities in your daily life. During therapy we examine the condition's affect on the body, and work with you to develop a plan that will promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. We also work with you to promote health and function by developing fitness and wellness programs that will support a healthier lifestyle.
What to expect during a session
Your First Visit
When you arrived at the clinic, you will be met by knowledgeable staff who will introduce you to the clinic and our services. To provide a knowledgable assessment of your condition, you will be asked to fill out a medical history, including past medical conditions and any prescriptions that you are taking, so please bring that information with you. Additional paperwork will provide your consent for treatment, and will provide additional information that will facilitate a positive experience for you.
Beginning with your first visit, you can expect to find a welcoming and private environment to meet with your therapist. Your therapist will take the time to listen to your story, as well as your needs and your goals, while working with you to identify your unique challenges. This meeting provides the perfect opportunity to experience the clinic and your therapist, to make sure this experience will be a good match for you.
Your Therapy Assessment and the Development of a Treatment Plan
During your assessment, your therapist will use gentle hands-on techniques to assess movement patterns, structure and posture, as well as the injuries and restrictions that may be causing imbalances in your body. As we will be performing a structural assessment, please bring something that you are comfortable wearing such as shorts -and a sports bra if you are a female. Standing pictures are also taken with your permission, so that your therapist can evaluate your structure and posture, which often indicate where there may be restrictions in your body. Your therapist will take the time to discuss any special concerns and answer any questions that you may have regarding either your treatment, schedule or payment options.
Physical Therapy Treatment Sessions
When you return for your first treatment session, your therapist will have developed a customized treatment program that will address your unique needs. They will discuss this plan with you and get your input to ensure that we are focusing on all of the challenges you wish to address. The initial therapy sessions will involve a gentle, hands-on therapy called Myofascial Release that will focus on releasing restrictions, reducing swelling and increasing mobility. Sessions will progress to include both manual therapy, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. During your sessions you will receive hands-on treatment and develop skills that will allow you to attain a healthier lifestyle.

What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue to release restrictions in the facia, facilitating movement and releasing holding and movement patterns that negatively impact your body.
What is Fascia?
Our fascial system is one continuous structure that exists throughout our body without interruption. Fascia is a very densely woven structure that is covering and and connected to every muscle, bone, nerve, our arteries and veins, and all of our internal organs. Illness or injury can often create fascial restrictions that can produce tremendous pressures causing pain and lack of mobility or function.
Fascia plays an important role in the support and function of our bodies, since it surrounds and attaches to all structures. In the normal healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When physical or emotional trauma, scarring, or inflammation occur, the fascia often becomes restricted, exerting excessive pressure that can affect the entire body, causing all types of symptoms and interrupting the balance the body needs to function properly. Fascial restrictions can also affect our flexibility and stability, and our ability to withstand stress and perform daily activities.

Beyond Myofasical Release
Our therapy goes far beyond Myofascial Release. As we work with you, we work to promote independence through a comprehensive approach that allows you to take part in life-long well being. This approach first teaches body awareness, creating an understanding of your body that will allow you to be an active participant in your healing. Then we will work with you to develop restoration strategies that will resort the balance and function in your body. We will then set you on a path to achievement, that will allow you to transition to an independent wellness program that will help prevent future challenges and injuries.

"Since working with Dr. Emily, the most significant benefit has been a reconnection between my brain and areas in my body that had 'disconnected' following physical trauma which occurred 7 years ago. Following the reconnection I have been able to perform the strengthening exercises Dr. Emily taught me.”
